There were no big plans today other than finding at least one geocache. So we returned to Patuxent River Park where we took Hugo and his family for a geocaching hike.

Hugo has learned about the areas around our home which are part of the Star Spangled Banner Trail. For three years the young United States was embroiled in the War of 1812 and the Chesapeake Bay region felt the brunt of it, choked by shipping blockades and ravaged by enemy raids. Through sites and landscapes in Virginia, the District of Columbia, and throughout Maryland, the Trail tells the stories of the events, people, and places that led to the birth of our National Anthem-The Star Spangled Banner.

We stopped the Patuxent Rural Museums, located within the 6,000-acre Patuxent River Park. There are a collection of museums and farm buildings dedicated to preserving the heritage of southern Prince George's County. There are seven buildings at the site. One them is the Duckett Cabin, a hand hewn log cabin which was typically used for slave cabins during the early 1800’s. This particular cabin was occupied until the 1920’s. Of particular interest is a chimney that leans on a pole. This was done as a safety precaution in response to frequent chimney fires. The pole could quickly be removed, allowing the chimney to fall away from the house, thus saving the cabin from fire.

For the first cache, I thought it was up in a tree and Hugo climbed up to look for it. But, it was not there. Instead, Cordell found it in a hole at the bottom of the tree.

Farther along the trail, Hugo found the second cache very quickly.

We stopped at Jerry’s Subs and Pizza restaurant for lunch. All of us ate steak and cheese subs.

Before returning home, we stopped at one of the caches that Cordell has placed in a cemetery. The last person who found it mentioned that the log was full, so we drove there to replace it. It is a very small nano cache and Cordell wasn’t sure that he could remember where he put it! The name of the cache is “A Resting Place” and it is on a bench where people are able to sit and “rest”. Hugo especially liked this one.

After we were at home for a while, Cordell went outside to mow the grass. He gave Hugo instructions on how to drive the lawn tractor and soon Hugo was cutting the grass also.

There was time for a very short rest before dinner. Then Cordell took Hugo to the Patuxent River front which is part of our neighborhood and they watched the sun setting for the end of the day.
